FIFA's tournament fixture page lists the Mexico-South Africa and Korea Republic-Czechia results as Group A matches. The first result made Mexico the opening winner of a tournament being staged across Canada, Mexico and the United States, while the second left Korea Republic level with Mexico on points before the next round of group fixtures.
World Soccer Talk reported that Julian Quinones and Raul Jimenez scored for Mexico in the opener. The Associated Press, in a report carried by Audacy, said the match had three straight red cards: South Africa's Sphephelo Sithole and Themba Zwane were sent off, and Mexico defender Cesar Montes was also dismissed.
The red cards give the result a disciplinary consequence as well as a table consequence. AP reported that the three sent-off players would be suspended for at least one match, with South Africa due to face Czechia and Mexico due to face Korea Republic in the next Group A fixtures. The Guardian's match report said Korea Republic next face Mexico on 18 June and Czechia meet South Africa the same day.
Korea Republic joined Mexico on three points by coming from behind against Czechia. The Guardian, carrying a Reuters match report, said Ladislav Krejci put Czechia ahead before Hwang In-beom equalised and Oh Hyeon-gyu scored the winner for Korea Republic. South Korea coach Hong Byung-bo told the outlet he had asked his players before the match not to give up and to play as one team.
