The result was Toyota's sixth overall Le Mans victory. The Guardian reported that it was De Vries' first win at the race and a second for Conway and Kobayashi. Daily Sportscar reported that Toyota's No. 7 had spent much of the race as the weaker of the two factory cars, then benefited from a safety-car phase and a full-course yellow around the final pit cycle.

That is why the finish was closer than a simple return-to-form headline suggests. Daily Sportscar reported that the No. 7 Toyota had a driveshaft sensor issue and a puncture, while the No. 8 Toyota lost time with a brake-drum mounting change. FIA WEC said Cadillac's No. 12 Jota entry was left to rue a drive-through penalty for a slow-zone infringement and two emergency pit stops as it finished fourth.

BMW's second place made the result more than a Toyota procession. Daily Sportscar quoted Rene Rast saying the team had mixed emotions because the result was a major success for BMW's WEC project but still close enough to make defeat sting. The No. 20 BMW's final charge cut Toyota's lead, but Kobayashi managed the gap to the flag.
